Behind The Routine: An Hayward’s Skincare Tips

Every time we see new pictures of An, we think, “Her skin always looks so great. How does she do it?” Curious to find out her secrets, we went straight to the source, An herself. She was generous enough to share her whole routine, plus the reasons why she does what she does. We took notes for you.

First, before I even wash, I use my makeup removerespecially on days when I’m shooting, and wearing more makeup than usual. Getting product off is really important to letting your pores breathe. I have two makeup removers that I have used for many years, and I will never change them. One is Bioderma Sensibio H20. The other one is La Roche-Posay Physiological Micellar Solution.

Washing my face first thing in the morning and last thing before I go to bed is the most important way I keep my skin looking nice. I learned that 24 years ago when I had my first facial, and I’ve been doing it ever since. My agent sent me to Bliss Spa. That’s where they taught me how important it was to wash my face morning and night. It’s really key to keeping your face healthy, clean, and fresh.

At night, I can’t wait to wash my face because I feel so good going to bed with clean skin. I put all my night skincare products on, and then get a good night’s rest. (Sleep is really important to having great skin, by the way!)  In the morning, people don’t wash their face because they think, “Oh, I was just asleep.” There is a lot of build-up when you’re sleeping. I wash with lukewarm water, because it doesn’t dry you out like hot water does. When I’m finished, I splash my face really quickly with ice cold water. It wakes you up and gets your circulation going. I switch back and forth between two cleansers: Shiseido White Lucent Brightening Cleansing Foam, for heavy makeup days, and La Roche-Posay Physiological Cleansing Gel. I have a little brush from Sephora that I use too, to exfoliate.

After I wash, I moisturize. Recently, my skin was going through a funkit felt dull and I needed something new. I think that sometimes your skin gets immune to the moisturizers that you use, if you use them for too long. I discovered a line from Tanja Maria, a former model in Los Angeles. My friend Yvonne was using them and her skin looked amazing. I tried her Rejuvenating Cream, eye cream, serum, and mask, and I loved them. I also love Clarins Double Serum, and their eye cream, Super Restorative Total Eye Concentrate. They also have a Blue Orchid Face Treatment Oil, which has been their best-seller for years. It’s great when you feel very dry. I use it a lot in the winter or when I travel.

Your neck, décolleté, and hands really need a little TLC, too. You can take care of your face, but if you don’t take care of your neck, it can get dry or wrinkle up.

For blemishes, my secret weapon is Avene’s Cicalfate Restorative Skin Cream. I don’t go anywhere without it. You know, breakouts do happen; it doesn’t matter how old you are. I use it before I go to bed every time I have breakout. It’s a thick white cream. It usually clears up my skin by morning.

Last but not least: one of the most important things you can do to keep your skin healthy is to drink a ton of water. I drink at least 2-3 liters of water a day. They always say, “When you’re thirsty, it means you’re already dehydrated.” Water is really the key.
